To me they sound identical except for the reverb. Housed in a distinct head/cabinet configuration, the Pathfinder 15 SMR offers the same great feature set as the Pathfinder 15R, including controls for Gain, Volume, Treble and Bass. The Pathfinder 15R is identical to the Vox Pathfinder 15 but also features an onboard Spring Reverb system with a Reverb control that adjusts the level of the effect! I have a 25-year-old Pathfinder, and a 15-year-old Pathfinder 15R. It features a 15 Watt head, a matching 2 x 10' vertical cabinet loaded with specially-voiced Celestion speakers, and a wealth of time-honored VOX tones.
